Context of Job:

 

The Health Professions Academic Advisor I provides comprehensive premedical/pre-health profession advising to alumni and undergraduate students from across all colleges and schools in one-on-one and group settings and prepares and delivers workshops and programs across campus. This position works as part of the Center for Health Profession Studies (CHPS) whose mission is to assist students in developing a path forward in their pursuit of advanced training and a career in the health professions including, but not limited to medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physician assistant training, and physical & occupational therapy. Students are also supported in a premedical post baccalaureate program of study.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Advise students interested in healthcare careers on the appropriate preparation for those paths including postgraduate program admission requirements (pre-requisite courses, standardized admissions tests preparation (MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE, etc.), co-curricular recommendations, development of admissions materials, and reviewing and selecting programs.
  • Advising may be in one-on-one, small group, or by leading workshops about related topics including pre-health options, career/major decision making, and professional development.
  • Advising includes contributing to New Student Orientation activities in the summer.
  • As part of advising responsibilities, create and maintain online and Center health profession materials for pre-health student advising.
  • Collect and analyze data on Center programs, including advising, efficacy and student success.
  • Contribute to the Center’s student experiential learning opportunities.
  • Engage in proactive outreach to monitor student progress.
  • Build and maintain knowledge of institutional regulations, policies, academic offerings, and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development of new Center programs and services, including a potential peer health professions advising program.
  • Assist the Academic Program Coordinator with administrative tasks that support the range of the Center’s programs and services.
  • Represent the CHPS at internal and external events such as UD Decision Days, Health Professions Fair, etc.), which includes some evening and weekend events.
  • Serve as an active member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and UD Advisor Network.
  • Perform other site- and position-specific functions as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, higher education, educational administration, counseling, career counseling, student development, STEM related degree, or other related field and two years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Communicates effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Demonstrates the ability to locate resources and information.
  • The ability to relate to the variety of students, faculty, staff, and parents that interact with the Center.
  • Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to present professionally to the campus community, or the willingness to learn this skill.
  • Consistent and persistent approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team focused on student needs.
  • Commitment to ethical responsibilities related to confidential information.
  • Experience in academic or health professions advising or educational programming preferred.
  • Understanding of UD advisement policies, procedures, systems, regulations, and standards at the university level including UDSIS, SLATE, and Stellic preferred.
  • Strong demonstrated interest in student support including data-driven methods to improve student success preferred.
